More and more companies are utilizing generative design software, which uses an algorithm to generate design suggestions based on a certain set of parameters. These results are often organic in nature and result in products with never-before-seen geometries. As 3D printing allows for the creation of complex designs, it often goes hand-in-hand with generative design. One of the leaders in functional generative design is Frustum, well known for its Generate cloud-based topology optimization solution.
Frustum recently released the latest version of its TrueSOLID generative design technology, which Vice President of Product Management Shibai Bagchi told us is “one of a kind” in the industry, as it “empowers users to seamlessly blend freeform generative geometry with precise CAD geometry producing manufacture ready designs that do not require manual re-modeling in CAD.” The company’s forward momentum is continuing as it expands and its customers grow in number. In the first quarter of 2018, Frustum saw a 100 percent revenue increase, driven by the growth of the overall additive manufacturing industry as well as an expanding number of customers using Generate software.
“3D printing is a game changer for manufacturers – shifting how products are designed, built, sold and serviced, creating jobs and redefining the supply chain,” said Frustum CEO Jesse Coors-Blankenship. “However, realizing 3D’s full potential requires new design processes that are generative instead of iterative, and that can deliver purposeful, manufacture-ready output. This is the goal of Frustum.”
Recently, Frustum expanded its Boulder, Colorado-based headquarters to a 40-person capacity and hired three new executives to lead its next stage of development.

Bagchi, who spoke with us at RAPID + TCT, joins as VP of Products, bringing more than 15 years of experience in Computer Aided Design and Manufacturing to the company. He previously worked in leadership roles at Autodesk, Siemens PLM and GE Digital.
Software industry veteran Steve Strachan has been hired as VP of Sales after more than 20 years of sales experience. Before coming to Frustum, Strachan served as Sales Director for Sumo Logic, VP Worldwide Sales at BladeLogic (BMC), VP Sales, EMEA at GeoTel (Cisco Systems), and SVP Sales, Southern Europe for PTC. According to Frustum, Strachan played an instrumental role in the revenue surge of 2018’s first quarter.
Kevin Scofield has come on to lead the technical marketing efforts at Frustum, investigating the ways in which generative design can influence how parts are made. Before coming to Frustum, Scofield held positions at several startups including Occipital, Xometry, and Geomagic (now 3D Systems). He has more than 20 years of experience in design and manufacturing and has helped to produce a wide range of products associated with reality capture, inspection, on-demand manufacturing and augmented reality.
In addition to its facility expansion and new hires, Frustum recently finalized its Series A financing with $10 million in funding to date. Frustum was founded in 2014 with the goal of making generative design more functional and accessible than options at that time allowed.
